Fuel Cell Removal

Today we decided it was time to remove the Gas Tank. I know I titled this post "Fuel Cell" I just think that sounded cooler. LOL

So after 2 hours on our backs, we were finally able to drop the tank.

Here's the old tank. It's really not in that bad of shape for being 35 years old. Can't tell you how old the gas that was in it was. 

Now that we have this tank removed, we can move on to the rockers and floor. 

The Tear down

Today after 3 months, we finally went to it. My boys, Tyler and Justin were a big help. It took 3 people to pull the doors off. Man are those things heavy.

Time for tear down of "ShagNasty"

Well it's been awhile since my last post. I wasn't sure if I was going to be keeping this Scout or not. Had if for sale for awhile but my Scout buddies told me "Dude, it's a Midas, Keep it" So.... I decided to keep her.

This week I got my pricing on the metal I'll be needing to replace my Inner Rockers, Outer Rockers and Floor. Not as bad as I thought. 

This weekend (Easter) Tyler, Justin and I will be starting. We will first take the doors off. from there we'll disassemble the headlights, turn signals and take the front grill off in order to remove both front fenders.

Once we have the front end torn off, it will give us room to fabricate new inner rocker panels.

We really haven't done much to her since December. A few weeks ago I did take off one tire and wheel (Passenger side, the worst one). Had the tire taken off wheel and let my local shop blast it. Here's how the one wheel looks now.                                                                                                           

  

Safety Neutral

Well I finally got the Pig Tail for my Safety Neutral Switch (thanks to Super Scout Specialists) I crawled under the rig today and found out why the pig tail was disconnected from the NSS. There are 3 prongs on the switch. Well mine only had 2. So it's off to NAPA for a new NSS. The good is International used a 727 transmission which is a very common trans. They had the NSS in stock. Now it's time to replace it.

Well this is not as easy and it looked. Of course there is one cable in the way. I need to move this cable but... you guessed it, unable to do this by myself. Need another hand.

I will wait till the boys are around and have them help me.

Once this switch is installed, My backup lights will work as they are suppose to.

A/C not working? Really this time of year?

Well I figured since I'm going the heater I should also look at the A/C and see why that's not blowing.

Took apart the A/C unit hanging from the bottom of the dash. The nice thing about this unit is its a factor A/C. Scouts had 2 systems, The heater and another was the A/C. Worked independently.

The blower motor for the A/C is behind the Glove Box. So out comes the Glove Box. Looks like someone was living in there for awhile. LOL

Found the power for the Blower Motor. Put 12v to that and bamm The motor works. GOOD.

Traced power from fuse box to A/C switch. I have power to the switch. GOOD

Do I have power coming out? NO. Crap. Took the switch apart and found a lot of corrosion on switch. Now trying to clean it. If I can clean it I believe it will be ok. If not, I'll have to figure out another switch.

Why No Heat?

Why No heat? First of all, the fan won't turn on. Must figure out why.

I've traced the wires coming from my "Off, Low, Hi" Fan switch to my Fan Motor Resistor.

I have power to the resistor. Good. Next I removed the Fan and the cage.

First I must see if we have a good fan motor. I put 12v power to the motor and presto, the fan spins. GOOD. 

Next I removed the wires going to the Resistor. I have power to the resistor put nothing from there to the fan. 

I removed the resistor from the housing and examined.

Well take a look for yourself. Rusted to the max. Even though this is a 3 speed resistor, I'm only using it as a 2 speed. Low and Hi. Lots of options back in '79

Here's a picture of the side that the worst, however, if I took a picture of the other side, you would also see the Hi Speed terminal has been broken off. The Hi Speed would have never worked. Now it's time to try and find a replacement. Lucky for me, International used some GM parts back in the day. I have found a replacement for my resistor. I also ordered a new Resistor connector. I'll have to rewire for new connector but I'm sure it will be better in the long run.


Next on the list is my A/C.
